As of 2007, United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UN FAO) statistics indicated that Indians had the lowest rate of meat consumption in the world. However, India is a country of meat-loving people with more than 64% of the population consuming meat and meat products according to this report by the National Institute of Nutrition.

The inforgraphic below illustrates the combined average of the three main meats consumed in each state of India. Lakshdweep tops this list at 4.40 Kg consumption per capita per month, followed by the coastal state of Kerala with 2.60 KG consumption per capita per month.
